Too Much for Too Long

Ok, so I need to do less. Or spend more time doing one thing at a time?

Since the last entry to this blog was at the beginning of November 2011 you've probably guessed that things haven't been working as smoothly as they should, or as smoothly as I wished they would.

Between illness, a full workload and the busy-ness of the end of the year, I've had to take a few steps back and re-evaluate what I can realistically and physically achieve with just the one set of hands and only 24hours in each day.

So I will be appearing only briefly on this blog to record the latest inspiration or to share a song, or a new work in progress... (there have been lots of these but sadly, not many finished pieces)

to be honest, its a relief to do not much at all for the time being.

A week behind the times

That's right. I'm a week behind with all my projects and a few more weeks behind on catching up with all my friends.
Unfortunately there is something in my diet that occasionally strongly disagrees with me and I end up in hospital on a drip and getting regular injections to try to stop me from being violently ill.
My stomach still feels weird. Wish I could figure out what it was that caused the sickness this time.

It is unfortunate that I can now never look at grapes in quite the same way again :(

Changing the subject... Commissions for 2011 are closed!
I now have more than enough to keep me busy until the end of the year so if you were hoping to book a custom artwork from me before Christmas you are a little bit late.

I will however take pity on the truly desperate and if you send me a heartfelt message I will see what can be done. I'm also happy to discuss the details for projects to take on in 2012 so don't be afraid to approach the big scary artist. I wont bite.

There will be lots to see and do throughout November and December. I am taking the entire contents of my studio to the Made with Love Markets at Pacific Bay Resort, Coffs Harbour on Dec 4th.

All my shops, Ginger Kelly Designs, Jasper and Pearl and Thistle and Fox will be gradually updated with new listings. My Christmas stockpile is waiting to be photographed & put up for sale.

Keep an eye on my facebook fan page for quick updates because I probably wont have time to look after this blog for the next few weeks. Calendars are almost ready! Here is a little preview...

If you were watching closely during the past week you would have noticed a few small things changing on my deviantart pages. _{That is your first hint. The second hint is that it might be a good idea to find out where my monthly newsletter comes from...}

How does this game work?

This is an example of what you are looking for. It's a badge with a fox on it.

There are 10 in total. They all look like the example above but every one has a different code printed on it. The example is NOT one of the 10 you need to find, but it does have a clue on it to help you find the first badge.

There are now 8 foxes on the loose! Catch them quick because time is quickly running out!

I have hidden these badges throughout my online profiles, websites, shops and a few other places where only the clues and a sharp nose will help you find them...

Some will be quite easy to find. Others may be tricky! Each badge has a clue to the location of at least one of the others.
Finding all 10 will require serious dedication ~ but trust me, it is worth it. Keep reading....

Surely everyone loves Autumn (even if its a long way away from here)

Its the depths of winter here at home and my chocolate cravings are out of control!
I am fantasizing about these chocolate filled mushrooms.
They look a m a z i n g....

Recently I've been thinking of concentrating on my sewing again... This dress is wonderful inspiration to delve into those fabric boxes and decorate my dressmakers dummy with scraps of silk, linen and lace.

Perhaps its time to go get that camera I've had my eye on for so long. My little collection of natural artifacts and specimens is growing as I've been keeping a look out for interesting things in the garden

One of the things I've been dying to photograph are the feral deer that I catch a glimpse of when I visit my grandmother's house. Perhaps I'll be lucky enough to get closer to them in Spring

I'll need a decent leather bag to carry my camera gear... maybe someone will get me a very early Christmas prezzie?

Well, its late and time to go back to my other nocturnal activities...

I'm better now

After a full month of flu, I am gradually feeling better, though I still have a persistent cough it seems to be fading away now.

*phew*

So back to work. Not that I ever really took any time off, I simply backed away and didn't update any of my web pages all month. There is so much catching up to do!

I'll start with the best things.

My art is keeping me alive, fed and housed. Only just, but there it is. A year ago I did not really believe that this would be possible, yet here I am supporting myself doing the things I love.

Mind you, I'm working 18 hours a day and all is made in my bedroom which is crammed to the ceiling with paint, fabrics, paper mache masks, stock photography costumes, postcards, art prints, jewelery supplies and postage boxes. Somewhere among all this I am balanced precariously on my office chair at my computer, typing with one hand while I hold my graphic tablet pen in the other. Its a strange mental picture for you, a balancing nightmare for me.

So now you have seen a little piece of my place.

And this is where the inspiration is coming from at the moment.

Ideas for Lazy Days

Life has been hectic lately, so I need to take a few moments and soak up some inspiration.
These treasuries are kind of like mood boards for the images and designs that are forming in my imagination at the moment.

I'd like to spend an entire day reading a really good book...

Or take a few friends on a quiet horse ride through the forest

A creative life depends on being able to balance unlimited creativity with periods of rest.
I need to find that balance.

Enchanted Garden

I've been crawling around the garden on my hands and knees looking for tiny subjects to photograph. This enthusiasm for macro photography is quite new and its been a surprise to find that my little camera isn't all that bad after all.... it can take pretty decent closeups. It's just everything else that it finds too challenging.

But horray for gift vouchers! For the first time in my life I won a substantial prize in a website design comp and I plan to put the winnings to good use. A decent DSLR camera has been on my wishlist for a very long time... so with a few more weeks of saving I will be able to go camera shopping!

In the meantime I'm reading alot and learning as much as I can about photography and I've made a promise to myself that I will actually read the manual before I use the camera this time ;)

There are just a few days left till my exhibition at the Coffs Harbour Bunker Cartoon Gallery closes on the 14th May. Then I'll be repacking all my prints and framed work and we'll be off to the sunday morning handmade markets in a couple of weeks where I'll also be showing my handmade jewelery collection 'Jasper and Pearl'.

Birthday Announcement

Thankyou to all my friends who wished me a happy birthday on the 22nd March
It was a magnificent birthday with lots of chocolate cake!
I am completely content now :)

First of all, I am delighted to announce that my first art exhibition will be held in Coffs Harbour at the Bunker Cartoon Gallery, starting on April 1st at 6pm. Come along if you're local and you can quiz me on my life as an artist....

Secondly, I have been hanging out for so long to tell you this:

My artwork 'Forest Spirit'

will be the new cover artwork for Charles de Lint's fantasy novel 'Eyes Like Leaves' due to be published early 2012.

Floods

I'm no news reporter so I wont list statistics and figures for what has been happening & what is still happening in QLD, Australia and Northern NSW at the moment... I'll only say that flash flooding is a terrifying experience and I only hope that everyone who was aware to be prepared for these terrible storms were able to get their families and friends away from the danger quickly & safely.

Luckily I live in an area that although it is now (& often) flooded, we live on higher ground and are able to stay out of danger. My thoughts are with all those who haven't been so lucky. Animals included.

Winter Dreams & Summer Rain

Tonight the sky is stitched with stars that seem brighter than ever because its been almost 3 months since there was a decent break in the clouds and constant rain. The strangest summer I've ever experienced in Australia. Everyone knows I cannot stand the heat so I dread the day when the sun appears for more than a few hours and turns the soggy ground into a midge factory. Real summers here are dreadful. Sticky, exhausting and every night your bed sheets covered in termites because you were trying to read one more chapter of your favorite book...

Oh, Listen... theres the rain again! Phew. That was close!

Excuse my scattered thoughts. I'm overdue for decent sleep again.

At this time of year I always think of all the Northern Hemisphere dwellers huddling in the snow. Complaining that its too cold & winter is too long while here I am complaining that its too hot and summer lasts forever... where is autumn when you need her?

I would love to experience a Christmas in the snow at least once.

Ok. Now my mind is empty. I can go to sleep.

Jingle Bells & How to Avoid Them...

If I hear one more Christmas carol...!&#%^@!

Its like entering some kind of torture chamber every time I buy bread & milk. Though I avoid any kind of shopping centre at this time of year, it is inevitable that I will have to fight my way through the crowds to get the essentials of survival.

Thankfully I've managed to cover my Christmas shopping for family & friends entirely online this year... and anything I cant buy I make with my own tired little hands.

With time flying by at an alarming rate I'm not sure if I'll get even half my projects finished before the end of year & with all these charm bracelets and calendars stacked up in my room, theres no money coming in & no space!

Can you help me dig my way out of my bedroom....

On the bright side I've finished all my commissioned work for the year and finally, after much deliberation I drew the hands for my sad Sorrow Star, the water nymph.

Hands have always been a challenge for me so I'm thrilled with how this drawing turned out after so many months of it waiting in the back of my sketchbook...waiting for me to make up my mind ;)

Welcome to my creative revolution...
Every few months I go into a frenzy of creative activity, drawing, painting, sewing, and now making jewelery!
Something I've always wanted to do for myself is to make a charm bracelet. I love the way these little charms can be put together to tell a little story, something that reflects my mood at the moment...

Right now, I'm writing little stories & poems which will be used in an upcoming project (I'm not giving too much away just yet) so the charm bracelets are reflecting the fairy tales and children's stories I've been reading for inspiration.

The little poem I wrote above is part of a feature of my favorite items on Etsy with the theme 'Secret Garden'. This is the beginning of a new series of treasuries to celebrate the cherished stories from my childhood

A Carnival of Inspiration

Three months pass in a flash

It seems my blog sort of fell off the radar there for a while... its been 3 months since I last updated this page! So, whats been happening? Too much & not enough.

On the artwork front I've been very productive with a few commissions and lots of new personal projects so you'll hopefully see a few new things in my gallery soon. As for the sewing side of things it would be great to have an extra pair of hands to do the tasks i hate, like sewing buttonholes and attaching zippers! In true 'avoider' fashion I've been leaving these things to last... pretty soon I'll have to face a mountain of fiddly needlework... oh help.

I had one of my latest artworks printed today. It looks pretty good on paper so I'm thinking of trying it on canvas as soon as I can raise the cash.
The work is 'The Nymphs'.

A digital mixed media piece I created as a challenge to re-create a master painting using a different medium. The artwork I re-created is JW Waterhouse's 'Hylas & the nymphs'

I'd love to get your feedback about these WIP videos/tutorials... do you find them helpful, informative or are they a complete waste of time? Its a strange thing to have to put my art process into words and I find it doesn't work very well for me so thats why I've been making video and picture tutorials instead, but I dont know... what do you think?

New Prints are available: 'Mermaid Mask'

I had this artwork printed to hang in my own room
This drawing represents a milestone in my artistic endeavors as it is based on the first ever digital mixed media artwork I ever created 'Mermaid Behind her Mask' (which can be viewed in my portfolio)
The original drawing is 12 x 15.5 inches drawn in graphite pencil on a super smooth, fine grain cardboard. I'll be using alot more of this type of paper for future works as it was truly a pleasure to work with

Taking Baby Steps & Failing

Sometime ago I started to investigate how all this web design stuff works...
At first, it was just a way for me to change a few colours... put a background image on my blog... add images...

I've fallen into a trap. I have so many big ideas & plans to build a decent site that I have designed all the graphics for... yet I have not the knowledge (or time!) to accomplish this

So... it seems I need to make friends with a web designer
Know anyone? ;)

An Autumn Faerie

She's finished! A new faerie haunting an autumn forest...

When i started this artwork I was planning to take step by step notes and screenshots so I could write a little tutorial or demo about how I work...then i just got carried away ...'off with the faeries as usual'.... and its finished! Ooops, forgot those screenshots!

One of the most important influences in the way I draw came from reading the books & admiring the illustrations of Brian Froud. I can remember being fascinated as a child by the folklore and some of the dark faeries he portrayed in his book 'Faeries'

I should probably introduce myself first

My Name is Lauren.
There are pictures racing through my imagination all day & night and occasionally I manage to catch one before it flies away. Here you'll be able to see some of my finished artworks and some of the things I'm still working on. As well as Visual Art, i also create one-of-a-kind clothing designs which I'll show off a little on this page.
